The husband pillow is also referred to as the boyfriend pillow, the study pillow, and the bed rest pillow. It doesn’t matter what you refer to it as, it performs the same function. They are invaluable because of how multi-useful they can be. I had wrote a previous blog last month about how I used them when I was a kid as a video game chair. They are still a very popular pillow.

Now, there is a new pillow that is very similar to the husband pillow. It is, in my opinion, better than the husband pillow. It can perform the same type of propping function and can lay flat to be used as a regular pillow. It can provide head and neck support, as well as lumbar support, and then can be “sat” up to two different levels.

I have heard of many people that like to use this pillow in case they get a case of night time heart burn or GERD. Then they can quickly prop themselves up and continue sleeping. As this picture shows, the woman is reading, if you get tired, you can simply put the book down and lay the pillow out flat. You can be asleep in no time. It is one of the more useful pillows I have seen.

It is available at slumbermart.com at only 4 Cents more than the husband pillow. That’s right 4 Cents. If you would like more information CLICK HERE.

As always, Art.

It could be the weather, or maybe the general stuffiness of being trapped indoor with the windows shut all winter long, but for some reason a lot of people have been telling me that haven’t been sleeping well lately. This includes myself, of course. Without sleeping well it just seems that the next day does not go as smooth, and for some reason takes longer to get over with. When all you want to do is get home for a nap.

Regardless of how the day went, or is going, a pillow update is all you may need to start sleeping better.

If your looking for that update then definitely check out slumbermart.com. We spend around 8 hours a day sleeping, might as well make it the very best.

So.
So maybe this isn’t the year for a family vacation.

Don’t give up yet though! While maybe Disney World and the Turks and Caicos Islands are out of the question, you can give yourself a little vacation every night with the right pillow or mattress topper.

The Washington Post just did a piece on selecting the right pillow . In it, Ms. Wright describes the joys of a good nights sleep that can be had just by adding the correct pillow to your sleep routine. She also state good pillows start at $75.00. We only partly agree with that.

While there is some “get what you pay for” in every industry, in pillows, often the same exact pillow from the same exact manufacturer will have a $20 to $60+ mark up once the distributor gets a hold of it. So a pillow you buy from us at $39.99 might retail at $99.99 elsewhere. But that’s business.

What SlumberMart can do for you is simple: Make every night a vacation.

Might we suggest:

The other day I looked into my bath tub to see one our towels, soaking wet and folded into a neat little square. It was folded down to about the size of a throw pillow. Underneath that was yet another one of our large bath towels folded the same way. They were both completely soaked. I was literally speechless. I did not know what that could possibly be meant for.

I brought it up to my girlfriend, Abby, and asked her what she was planning to do. Apparently, she soaked the two towels and folded them into pillows so she could be more comfortable while taking a bath. She was using an oatmeal soak and couldn’t get comfortable on the hard porcelain. She basically made two small pillows out of the towels, on to sit on and the other to lean her back against. The towels helped, and soaking them kept them from slipping, but it wasn’t perfect.

I remembered a product available at Slumbermart.com that would work perfect for this situation. It’s the Spa Bath Pillow. It is comfortable, has suction cups so it will stay in place, and is affordable. It would make a great gift to anyone who enjoys baths. I know I’ll be getting one for my girlfriend. Just don’t tell her, it’s a surprise.

As always, Art.

Many people can only fall asleep on their sides. It can be hard to find the right pillow to do so, most of them being too thick leaving your head and neck at an awkward angle. Waking up in the middle of the night with a pinched nerve in your neck is no fun and is not healthy. This also includes women after their 20th week of pregnancy. Doctors say that pregnant women lying on their backs while they sleep can actually restrict the main vein that bring blood back to the heart. That can sometimes lead to light headed feeling for women when they wake up, and its not good for the baby.

I have heard stories of people who have tried to stay on their side while they sleep but always end up on their backs, causing snoring and restricted blood flow. The culprit could be your big fluffy pillow. It may be forcing you to roll over during the night without you being aware.

Try the Slender Sleeper.

It is supportive without being to thick and may help you remain on your side. Also, you may want to put a that fluffy pillow at the middle of your back. That way, you wont be able to roll over as easily.

As always, Art.

I really didn’t want to write another blog about how sleep is eluding me. The last blog I wrote I talked about how I couldn’t fall asleep. Last night I fell asleep just fine, but I woke up with a jolt and had trouble getting back to sleep. I have written previously about the risks you take by not getting adequate sleep. Sometimes not getting a good night’s sleep is out of your hands, and if you are like me, then falling back asleep is easier said than done.

I awoke to strange noises last night. The sounds were a cross between the groans of zombies in The Hills Have Eyes and a soliloquy by Gollum from Lord Of The Rings. Needless to say, I sprang from bed in a defense position, frightened of Freddy Kruger, awaiting the Sons of Belial. I found the noise was coming from outside my bedroom window and was nothing more than 2 cats trying to defend their territory. My heart, now starting to beat again in its new location, my throat, was not ready to calm down enough to go back to bed. If this at all sounds familiar (I, for your sake, hope not) you may want to try any, or all of these steps to get back to slumber.

1. Try reading something mind numbing in dim light. Don’t watch TV, commercials tend to be stimulating. Bright lights also make you more alert. Reading something job related, or financial, can get the mind whirring again, and that’s not conducive to sleep.

2. Get right out of bed. By sitting there in the dark, wondering why you’re not asleep, you’ll actually keep yourself up. Get out of bed and try number 1.

3. Visualize. The old “count sheep” routine actually works. If you don’t like sheep for some reason, think of yourself walking up or down an endless staircase, or maybe walking down a moonlit beach. Any relaxing scene you can think of will work.

4. Listen to some white noise. Turn on a fan, a humidifier, dehumidifier, anything that creates a buzz or a hum. For some people this makes for a little extra comfort and helps you get back to sleep.

5. Lose the clock. Take that gigantic, illuminated, digital clock and turn it around or put a shirt over it. The light of it will stimulate your brain keeping you awake, and watching the clock doesn’t help you get back to sleep.

These tips aren’t necessarily scientifically proven, but they will help if you find yourself in a similar situation that I was in last night. If only I had written this blog yesterday…

As always, Art.

I’m not sure about you, but I really couldn’t sleep at all last night. The usual sleepless night can sometimes be caused by stress. But, when you start looking up causes and symptoms of insomnia, you find that it is a little more complicated than just stress. Factors can include stress, anxiety, excitement, hormone shifts, alterations in circadian rhythm (jet lag, shift work) medical conditions, and overall poor sleep hygiene. If some of these factors happen to be in your life at this time, it could be the cause of your sleeplessness. Sometimes a change in diet and a brisk walk every night can alleviate some of these problems.

I found that there are 3 different types of insomnia, in varying degrees intensity. People use the word insomnia pretty loosely, when in fact their symptoms might not actually be insomnia. The three types are Transient, Acute, and Chronic. Transient only last a few days to a few weeks, and is the most common type of insomnia. Transient is usually caused by stress or anxiety. Acute insomnia lasts for up to 6 months. It is a little less common then transient, but should not be ignored. If you are not getting a good nights sleep for over a few months professional help is required. Chronic insomnia is not very common and is described as “insomnia lasting over 6 months to years”. Although this case has not been all that common, it has been accentuated in movies such as Fight Club. (Edward Norton’s character is a chronic insomniac.)

There are many different types of over-the-counter and prescription drugs that can help combat insomnia, some with different risks of dependency. There are also many natural remedies as well. You may want to try updating your bedroom. The answer could be a mattress topper or pad, or a new pillow. Check out slumbermart.com for more ideas.

I hate going to bed on an empty stomach. It always made me feel kind of bad for myself, as if I couldn’t afford to properly eat. When I was younger, I would go down to mom’s fridge and empty it out. But, now, I can’t really eat before bed because I am one of the many who suffer from night time heartburn. There are ways to grab a light snack before bed without causing an influx of acids. Plain slices of low fat turkey are low in acid and contain a natural sedative called tryptophan. (For the record, Tryptophan isn’t what makes you sleepy, it’s actually serotonin. Tryptophan is, however, an essential amino acid that helps to make niacin, which in turn helps produce serotonin, which calms you and makes you sleepy.) It works best on an empty stomach. If you can’t sleep, you many want to get out of bed, read for a little while as you snack on some turkey. That should calm you down enough to finally get a little sleep. Tryptophan is also found beans, soy, and peanuts for anyone who doesn’t eat turkey.

If, you can’t stay away from the leftover manicotti the fridge, and you end up eating a plate full of that instead of the plain low fat turkey (I know I have) you may want to try a wedge pillow. Raising your upper body 4 to 8 inches above your stomach can reduce your tendency towards GERD and heartburn. If you have already tried these types of pillows and you just can’t get comfortable with them, you can also try the bed rest study pillow. They are also known as husband pillows or boyfriend pillows. I have written about these pillows before. They will help raise your upper body and might be a good choice since they are used for more than just GERD patients.

Getting adequate amounts of sleep is extremely essential for all ages. Last year in April, an article surfaced about an experiment with sleepers. Dr. Micheal Twery, director of the National Center on Sleep Disorders Research at NIH’s National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute reported that after a few nighs of only 4 hours of sleep, the patients started to develop a resistance to insulin. Without the body’s ability to use insulin properly, over time, diabetes could develosp. When the patients were allowed to go back to their normal 8 hour sleep schedule, the problem reversed in just a few days.

How many hours of sleep do you get per night? Do you think you’re getting enough? Is GERD effecting your sleep?

Here’s to a good night’s sleep.

There has recently been a debate about copper pillows. Many people would like to know what makes a copper pillow so rejuvenating. Is it the pillow itself or the case that it comes in?

Cupron Copper Technology has been able to add the antimicrobial qualities of copper to cotton. The copper oxide compound was able to be bonded to cotton. It created a soft, comfortable surface that was strongly antimicrobial and has been proven to reduce fine line wrinkles while you sleep. I had previously wrote about it on January 21st in a blog post called Copper Pillows, Cupron, and Ageless Sleep.

But the question still remains. Where is the copper? Inside the pillow? Or is it just in the case?

There are many websites that sell a copper pillow. Some of them are upwards of $80. Now, for the most part it would seem that the more expensive the pillow, the more copper it contains. Some of these same sites are selling their pillows as a “wrinkle miracle cure”. But the pillows themselves do not contain any copper or curing qualities. It’s just the pillowcases. Some of these other pillow companies have gotten away with tricky copy that make it seem that the copper is inside the pillows too. For the most part, the pillow fill is usually a poly/cotton blend.

This is exactly the case at Slumbermart.com. The copper pillow is on sale right now. It is about $60 cheaper than most of the other sites that I found. Cupron is a company with an excellent track record for being “green” during manufacturing as well as creating one of the most durable and premium quality copper/cotton fabrics. The copper is combined with the cotton, the cotton is then made into a fully washable pillow case, and then some of the cotton is blended with a poly fill to create the inner core of the pillow. This puts the antimicrobial effects of the pillow inside as well as outside, protecting you from allergies as well as the signs of age.

I hope that solves the debate. Or, at the very least, answers a few questions.
